Janice Fergusson, Fergusson Law Principal

Janice Fergusson

Janice Fergusson Nisbet, the Principal and Legal Director of Fergusson Law, took her law degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Edinburgh and qualified as a solicitor with an eminent Edinburgh law firm. She spent many years as a Private Client Solicitor with the same law firm.

Janice has qualifications from the Association of Taxation Technicians in personal taxation, business taxation, accountancy, and the taxation of trusts and estates. Janice has twenty years of experience in giving inheritance tax advice. She is also qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales and works part-time at the University of Edinburgh, tutoring on the Private Client course in the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

Before becoming a lawyer, Janice worked for many years as an Inspector with the Health and Safety Executive, covering a range of industries. She has a post-graduate Diploma in Safety and Occupational Hygiene from the University of Aston in Birmingham.

She is a Technical Member of the Probate Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Janice has a degree in Modern Languages from St Andrews University and speaks French and German, having lived in both countries.

Janice is assisted at Fergusson Law by fellow solicitors Katy Kowalski, Cara Lawson,  Louise Patterson, Amal Fazeli and Kate Fisher.

Katy Kowalski

Senior Solicitor, and Director, Katy graduated from Aberdeen University with an LLB and went on to complete the one-year postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice at Edinburgh University.

Katy completed her formal traineeship at Fergusson Law incorporating continuing professional development in private client matters. She has Registration with the Law Society of Scotland as a Solicitor and Notary Public. She practices mainly in Conveyancing and Property Law whilst also undertaking her STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates.

Cara Lawson, Senior Solicitor at Fergusson Law

Cara Lawson

Senior Solicitor Cara has specialised in conveyancing since 2014, having completed a conveyancing focussed traineeship in 2016.

She completed her undergraduate LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice both at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. She has registration with the Law Society of Scotland as a Solicitor, and with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as a  Notary Public.

Louise Patterson, Associate Solicitor at Fergusson Law

Louise Patterson

Associate Solicitor Louise is an experienced private client practitioner working on the administration of estates, preparation of wills, powers of attorney, and succession planning for asset protection. Louise is also experienced in applying for  guardianships.  She holds the STEP Diploma in Trusts and Estates.

She has registration with the Law Society of Scotland as a Solicitor, and as a Notary Public.

Nicolás Barry

Nicolás Barry

Nicolás graduated in 2022 with a degree in Law and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. He completed his Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at Edinburgh in May 2023 with in-person experience in international trade law as applied to international organisations. He joins us at Fergusson Law for a two-year supervised Traineeship leading to full qualification as a Solicitor.

Amal Fazeli

Amal Fazeli

Amal graduated from the University of Stirling in 2018 and the University of Glasgow in 2020. After completing the Diploma in Legal Practice, Amal undertook her training with a general practice firm in Edinburgh dealing with private client matters and  residential conveyancing.  Amal qualified as a Solicitor in November 2022 and is now part of the Private Client team at Fergusson Law , dealing with Wills, Powers of Attorney and Executries. Amal is also a Notary Public.

Kate Fisher

Kate Fisher

Kate joined Fergusson Law in 2023 as a newly qualified solicitor having completed her traineeship in the private client department of a Glasgow law firm.  Kate graduated from Robert Gordon University with an LLB, followed by Edinburgh University for her postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.  Kate is registered with the Law Society of Scotland as a Solicitor and Notary Public.

Kate began studying law in 2016, following a career break focussed on raising her son.  Kate is an MBA graduate of The Open University Business School;  her previous career culminated in a senior management position within financial services.

Congratulations to Daria, who has recently passed her conveyancing course with flying colours and is now a qualified residential conveyancing paralegal. Daria joined Fergusson Law in 2021, working closely with our solicitors in a supporting role, and it is good to see how much progress she has made in advancing her career.
